China has lodged a formal complaint with North Korea after one of the North's border guards shot and killed three people and wounded a fourth, all presumably Chinese, on the countries' border in north-eastern China.
"On the morning of June 4, some residents of Dandong, in Liaoning province, were shot by a DPRK [North Korean] border guard on suspicion of crossing the border for trade activities, leaving three dead and one injured," a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said.
"China attaches great importance to that and has immediately raised a solemn representation with the DPRK. Now the case is under investigation," he added.
There have been some reports in South Korean media on the incident, though North Korea has not acknowledged the shootings. It remains to be seen how the incident will affect relations between North Korea and China, which is North Korea’s closest ally in the region.
